Doomsday Book

by Connie Willis · published 1992 · last read 2026-01-25
★★★★★
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis is the best book about time travel that I know of, with the notable exception of "This is how you lose the time war". It's started out good, and then proceeded to kick me in the feelings. Repeatedly. Time

After resenting the cliffhanger ending in Unsouled, I'm more reconciled with this one. Once you expect the cliffhangers, after all, they can't hurt you. This second part of the Cradle series sho

This was nice. Chinese inspired fantasy, but with a high escalation path into stellar politics among superpowered/ascended beings. The juxtaposition of the two ("low level farm boy" vs "god-like beings") was clumsy at times, and it cuts off

Hellspark

by Janet Kagan · published 1988 · last read 2025-06-01

Hellspark is not without faults, but faults do not remove a five-star rating given out of pure joy. This is what I want my scifi to be like, and the fact that Kagan has not published much (and died in 2008) was rough to discover in a world

Red Sister

by Mark Lawrence · published 2017 · last read 2025-04-26

Red Sister is a beautifully written fantasy novel that switches flawlessly between intimate characterisation, lyrical prose, and gripping action, all set in a deeply fascinating world. And by fascinating I mean: the moon is a parabolic mirr

I liked Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. Grey Sister was an appropriate second volume – It was a good-ish second part to Red Sister, but I felt it lacked a sense of cohesiveness. For a long time it just moved from one action after the oth

Way more fun than I had expected it to be – I had read Downbelow Station before, but didn’t remember much (enough to remember recurring characters when they came up, at least). This, though! The two protagonists, Sandor and Alli, come fr

This is a weird one – an online serial that is a) finished, b) published as four books, and c) still available to read for free online. My review is about the free online version: I raced through the ~4k pages in under a week and had fun. I

Xianxia plot with decent worldbuilding. Reviewing at chapter 91 (which is relatively early in book/arc 3). As usual, the protagonist is overpowered, not in terms of actual power, but in terms of analysis and brain power. Very rationalist/Ma

Safety Anarchist

You’d think that this book would be catnip for me: The premise (compliance and security theatre has grown way too much, rules like that are good at preventing some accidents but not others, give people some agency and watch how they’ll make

Cover of Patternmaster.

Patternmaster

by Octavia E. Butler · published 1976 · last read 2025-02-20

Patternmaster was very enjoyable, and presented great characters (ever Octavia Butler's strength). There was decent worldbuilding, and I'd love to learn more about this world that is a distant decendant of ours – but sadly, the book ends

Man, Octavia Butler doesn't do nice – in the end, there's always violence/rape/horror. I'm starting to see a little too many parallels between her books in terms of characters involved, and the general feeling/direction, so I'll probably la

I liked Mind of My Mind by Octavia Butler – to me it was the most interesting part of the Patternmaster series so far. It explores how, within our society as it exists today, the Patternist community came to exist, and soon domina

Wild Seed (first part of Octavia Butler's Patternmaster series) was good, but not great. She experiments with the implication of mortal and immortal characters, who definitely aren't gods, and while I enjoyed the premise, and the writ
