Umberto Eco is a show-off. He goes all in on being a show-off, and he doesn't mind being pretentious and shoving obscure references down your throat either. As all nerds, once he gets going, he's unlikely to stop any time soon, so his books are long-winded and stuffed with references upon references. This can be obnoxious.

Chromatacia is Brave New World, but on drugs. Everybody can see only one colour, and your colour determines your social class, while your strength of perception determines your position. Half of the book's strength is in its puns: the Colortocracy, the Swatchman (doctor) … It's a classic dystopia with a punny twist. The characters are all plausible but not terribly likeable, but the world building rules, and the plot is compelling. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but there is enough conclusion to the main plot arc that I felt content. Poor Fforde, publishing this book two years ahead of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Blindness felt really strong – the general vibe of the book is still easy to recall for me years later. The epidemic blindness that befalls everybdoy in contact with a victim is terrifying, but the terror isn't overdone. It's humanized, low-key, loving even. I'm glad I read this book.

Tiffany is growing up, very much so. I didn't care much for half of that, and I thought the general plot wasn't the best, but the writing – oh! the writing. It's good enough to make me ignore all possible objections and just be happy that we got this much of it.

American Gods is a polarising book, and I belong to the people enchanted by it. Gaiman does wonderfully dirty, touching things with language, and mythology, and just drew me in.
