Cover of Solaris.

Solaris

by Stanisław Lem · published 1961 · read 2013-11-01
★★★☆☆
Solaris is creepy, but in a good way. One of the relatively few earlier scifi books that spoke to me. A bit too kafkaesque for my taste, maybe, but good execution nevertheless. The foggy planet is creepy even before it starts doing things.

Cover of Nation.

Nation

by Terry Pratchett · published 2008 · read 2013-10-01
★★★★☆
Nation is amazing. Non-Discworld, YA-ish story of a Victorian girl meeting a boy from an islander tribe – she strands, his tribe is wiped out by the same tidal wave. As you'd expect from Pratchett, he thoroughly does away with any notions o

The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win

by Gene Kim · published 2013 · read 2013-09-01
★★☆☆☆
The Phoenix Project is a very nice management introduction for IT projects, talking about ITIL, about processes and about Agile Methods.

Goodreads LibraryThing Amazon
Cover of Vaterland.

Vaterland

by Robert Harris · published 1992 · read 2013-08-01
★★★★☆
One of the few books that improve by translating them to German. Alternate history where Hitler won WW2 and everything is German. A mystery set in that scenario in the 60s – well-researched, well-paced. It's not a cheap dystopia, it's real

Cover of A Feast for Crows.

A Feast for Crows

by George R.R. Martin · published 2005 · read 2013-07-01
★★☆☆☆
This is where I stopped reading the series, for lack of caring what happened to the characters.

Goodreads LibraryThing Amazon
Cover of Little Brother.

Little Brother

by Cory Doctorow · published 2008 · read 2013-05-01
★★★☆☆
Cory is always preaching. I don't like preachy books (look at all my Narnia hate). Even when I like the message, as I do here, I'd like to be taken more seriously as a reader.

Goodreads LibraryThing Amazon
Cover of Stardust.

Stardust

by Neil Gaiman · published 1997 · read 2013-04-01
★★★★☆
Stardust is a joyful and lovely fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman, that has been turned into an equally joyful and loving movie. I knew the movie first (though many of the details were way over my head back then), and it is superficially similar

Goodreads LibraryThing Amazon
Cover of Mockingjay.

Mockingjay

by Suzanne Collins · published 2010 · read 2013-03-01
★★★☆☆
Only read this book to complete the trilogy.

Goodreads LibraryThing Amazon
Cover of Fahrenheit 451.

Fahrenheit 451

by Ray Bradbury · published 1953 · last read 2023-12-05
★★★☆☆
Book burners are prime "are we the baddies?" material, but it still was an impressive book – particularly compared to other 50s scifi. The firemen whose job it is to start fires were a nice touch.
