The Neverending Story

by Michael Ende · published 1979 · read 2002-03-01

Neverending – oh, if only! I loved this book as a kid, and there are infinite possibilities for tie-ins (though arguably the book is better off without them).

Cover of Coraline.

Coraline

by Neil Gaiman · published 2002 · read 2003-02-01
★★★★★
Coraline is a wonderful book. Terrifying, too. Coraline and her parents move to a new place, where there's nothing apart from the other (strange!) people living in the house. Her parents are busy all day, and she's just left to her own devi

Cover of Every Heart a Doorway.

Every Heart a Doorway

by Seanan McGuire · published 2016 · read 2018-10-06
★★★★☆
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is a nice little fantasy tale of the place where children go after going through a Door to Another Place (Fairylands, for example), and then coming back. It's short, and sweet, and sad, and gruesome

Cover of Way Station.

Way Station

by Clifford D. Simak · published 1963 · read 2021-06-28
★★★☆☆
Rural US portal space travel scifi: Aliens need a portal on earth, to pass through, and they select Enoch as station keeper. Bonus: As long as he's in the station, he doesn't age. This goes well for over a hundred years (Enoch starts out fi

Alice in Wonderland

by Lewis Carroll · published 1981 · read 2004-06-01
★★★☆☆
The trippy book. I read Alice as a child, with a lot of confusion at first, and then with some resignation to the fact that it would all make sense once I was older.

Beware of Chicken

by CasualFarmer · published 2022 · read 2022-03-25

Must have fallen down a progression fantasy hole somewhere. Not usually quite my genre, but when it's some of the better written free fiction out there (aka no typos, actual sentences, punctuation!), what can you do. It's pretty much Stard

Cover of The Long Earth.

The Long Earth

by Terry Pratchett · published 2012 · read 2014-06-01
★★★☆☆
Parallel worlds are always fun, and I liked very much how the concept was set up. Normally in scifi you get a good concept like this, then an okay plot and cardboard characters. Sadly, in Long Earth everything except for the concept was mad

The Ten Thousand Doors of January

by Alix E. Harrow · published 2019 · read 2021-05-13
★★☆☆☆
Coming-of-age stories are possibly just not for me anymore. The book-driven portal fantasy is nice enough, and the helping of "remember how bad turn-of-the-century racism is" is not bad if a bit forced, but … I just didn't care about the pr

The Misplaced Legion

by Harry Turtledove · published 1987 · read 2021-02-16
★★☆☆☆ (did not finish)
When a Roman legion fights some Gauls, they are magically placed in a different world. This world has actual magic, has never heard from their world, and the society and politics closely resemble the Byzantian empire. Turtledove clearly kno

And Put Away Childish Things

by Adrian Tchaikovsky · published 2023 · read 2024-01-26

Good god why are all takes on Narnia so depressing? I'm the first person to rant about C.S. Lewis, I really am, but come on! I didn't enjoy this trip at all – I'm not going to call it the British alternative to The Magicians, because that

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

by C.S. Lewis · published 1950 · read 2002-06-01

Confession: I hated the Narnia books when I first read them, and I don't care enough to update my opinion. I hated the transparent religion shilling going on, I hated everything about the dour moralising, and I felt personally offended at L
