I'm currently behind on reviews, so don't be surprised if the recent reviews are a bit sparse.

A Monster Calls

Cover of A Monster Calls.

Conor’s mum is ill, and he’s not dealing well with it. In all fairness: he’s dealing very realistically not well with it, apart from the big magic tree thing, which creepily forces him into emotional truthfulness. Rough read โ€“ I kinda want to be callous and rate it at two stars for predictability, but it hit its notes well. Three stars from me probably means 4+ for people who are into YA, btw โ€“ I’ve recently noticed that while I’m still reading YA by habit and reading list, I have started to enjoy it less on average.
