I'm currently behind on reviews, so don't be surprised if the recent reviews are a bit sparse.

The Stranger Times

Cover of The Stranger Times.

Urban Fantasy mystery from inside a tiny supernatural-focused newspaper in Manchester. Everybody’s a dick, and/or broken, usually both. People die left and right, and we get the inside perspective from Team Antagonist, which doesn’t do much to keep any tension alive. Didn’t much care about the mystery (which is fine, I’m not a mystery person), but didn’t much care about the characters either. Even the potentially lovable ones were generally shown from their worst side โ€“ there’s a fine line between “bristly but sympathetic behind all their behaviour” and “why do I allow you to enter my brain via book”, and this came down largely on the latter, without real need.

This book is part of the 2022 Backlog Incident.
