I'm currently behind on reviews, so don't be surprised if the recent reviews are a bit sparse.

Downbelow Station

Cover of Downbelow Station.

Classic case of a book that I wanted to have read more than I wanted to read it. Every part of it is just fine, and looking back on it is pleasant, but the actual act of reading was not enjoyable for me at all. It was just so slow! So. So. Slow.

Other than that, I understand why people like it. It has DS9/Babylon 5 vibes all over. Big space politics (Union vs Company) which reflect in local politics, which are driven by real personalities (albeit rather simple ones, you can always see the motivation section of the character sheet โ€ฆ). Nice touch on the aliens, too, though I was hoping for more complexity there.

All in all, it wasn’t an intolerable read or a bad book, I just failed to enjoy it at all.

This book is part of the 2022 Backlog Incident.
