Asches to Asches
by Scott Alexander
· published 2014 · read 2019-09-20
★★★★☆
What is truth, quoth Pontius Pilate. Asches to Asches is one of those witty stories by Scott Alexander. It illustrates precisely the source of my anxiety when reading non-fiction: I think I can be conned into believing anything if you just dress it up correctly. Good read, good ending.
It Was You Who Made My Blue Eyes Blue
by Scott Alexander
· published 2015 · read 2019-09-20
★★★★☆
Speak about writing to a narrow target demographic: This is a rationalist short story by Scott Alexander, exploring the impact of logic and colonialisation on an island tribe. KIDDING! While technically correct, it is also false, and I can't tell you more than that without giving away the best part of the punch line. Go read it! It's not long, and a lot of fun, particularly the first half, before the smug rationalist author breaks through.
Ars Longa, Vita Brevis
by Scott Alexander
· published 2017 · read 2019-09-20
★★☆☆☆
What is it with rationalist fiction and that stilted style? Can't people make an argument without sounding like badly written robot hybrids? Ars Longa, Vita Brevis is not one of Scott Alexander's best stories. Skippable, to me, because the content lost out against the style.
