Das Stunden-Buch

by Rainer Maria Rilke · published 1899 · last read 2022-01-18
★★★★★
One of my favourite pieces of poetry. Probably doesn't translate well (to English, to German that isn't steeped in religion, etc).

Cover of Gedichte.

Gedichte

by Erich Kästner · published 1987 · read 2009-10-01
★★★★☆
I really really like Kästner's poems. They get dark, they get snarky, they are political, they don't stop for anybody, except for their author's sentimentality. He doesn't do sentimentality very well – but he knows it, and he can laugh abou

Die Zeit fährt Auto

by Erich Kästner · published 1928 · read 2008-04-01
★★★★☆
The first Kästner poems I ever read – overlaps with the others, but reading a Kästner poem twice is good for the soul, anyways.

Doktor Erich Kästners Lyrische Hausapotheke

by Erich Kästner · published 1936 · read 2008-06-01
★★★★☆
More Kästner poems, these here designed to help you during your everyday life. And – surprisingly – they do. Well, some of them do, but that's how every collection of poem works.

Cover of Clouds Cannot Cover Us.

Clouds Cannot Cover Us

by Jay Hulme · published 2019 · read 2020-01-13
★★★★☆
Rilke-style modern poetry, targeted to adolescents and adults. I don't read much poetry, but I am a fan of Rilke, for reference.

Cover of War Music.

War Music

by Christopher Logue · published 2015 · read 2021-03-12
★★★★☆
War Music is art. Christopher Logue transformed the Iliad into a modern poem, and it's all kinds of awesome. The story is the real deal: Heroes of old, clad in bronze, fighting for a city and for honour and most of all for an honourable w

Cover of Sharp Teeth.

Sharp Teeth

by Toby Barlow · published 2007 · read 2021-03-16
★★★★☆
Werewolf packs in LA might seem like an urban fantasy staple (and it is), but not like this: Toby Barlow tells the brutal (but not edgy! never that) story of the werewolves and their surroundings in form of an epic, 300 page modern poem.

Cover of Beowulf.

Beowulf

by Maria Dahvana Headley · published 2020 · read 2021-11-13
★★★★☆
Confession: this is my first time reading Beowulf, in any translation. So of course I picked a new, modern, controversial one: what else? Maria Dahvana Headley had previously written The Mere Wife, Beowulf with Grendel's mother as protago

Cover of The Sign of the Dragon.

The Sign of the Dragon

by Mary Soon Lee · published 2020 · read 2024-01-23
★★★★☆
This is an epic poem – or rather, a collection of poems telling one epic story: The protagonist Xau is the king's fourth son, and upon his death, is sent to the mountain to be presented to the king-choosing dragon, who has rejected (and kil

Cover of Deaf Republic.

Deaf Republic

by Ilya Kaminsky · published 2019 · last read 2024-11-28
★★★★☆
Not falling in love with this one, but there are very strong parts in it, and what more can you really ask for in a poetry collection / smol epos. Re-read because I’m giving the book away.

Cover of Essential Tales and Poems.

Essential Tales and Poems

by Edgar Allan Poe · published 1843 · read 2003-01-01
★★★☆☆
Long time since I've read Poe – but the clever (if old-school) language and the fine sense for vibes and rhythm have stuck with me, far beyond the famous raven.

Deep Wheel Orcadia

by Harry Josephine Giles · published 2021 · read 2023-02-15

I tend to really like the experimental stuff, especially when it’s playing with language, and very especially epic poetry. So why didn’t this work for me? I don’t know. Harder for a non-native speaker to get into, I guess, because it runs
