Epic

by Conor Kostick · published 2004 · last read 2022-09-20
★★★★☆
The world's a game, and we're all players – that's how things work in Epic. Digital currency can be spent and gained in the global VR video game. Our protagonist is rather poor, and has to play the odds – then he makes the stupid and de

Cover of Dracula.

Dracula

by Bram Stoker · published 1897 · read 2009-04-01
★★★★☆
Dracula is over one hundred years old, by now (the book, not the vampire!). It has aged, but not to the point that it is unreadable. It's slow-going and stuffy at times, but I found that much more bearable in an epistolary work than in regu

Cover of Waiting for Godot.

Waiting for Godot

by Samuel Beckett · published 1952 · last read 2010-04-07
★★★☆☆
Waiting for Godot showed me how free literature was, and the things a determined author can do with and through (and arguably to) a group of actors. I like it for this learning impact, a lot.

Doctor Who: Eleven Doctors, Eleven Stories

by Eoin Colfer · published 2013 · read 2018-01-24
★★★☆☆
An alright collection of Doctor Who stories, but missable for the most part. Neil Gaiman's Thatcher story was unsurprisingly the highlight of the collection.

The Eternity Code

by Eoin Colfer · published 2003 · read 2005-12-01
★★☆☆☆
Artemis gets more growth and a mind wipe, both completely deserved. Holly gets less growth and more voice, which is also nice. All in all an enjoyable book, up to the standard set by Arctic Incident, and better than the first book.

Cover of Artemis Fowl.

Artemis Fowl

by Eoin Colfer · published 2001 · read 2004-02-01
★★☆☆☆
Artemis Fowl was fun at the time – I particularly enjoyed decoding the secret message in the decoration on every page. It was a good thing to read at the time, but nothing I'm going to revisit any time soon – I don't think it would stand up

The Arctic Incident

by Eoin Colfer · published 2002 · read 2004-06-01
★★☆☆☆
Arguably an instance of the second book being better than the first book: We see more of Holly, Artemis is forced to cooperate. There's more banter, there's more depth to both our heroes, and the plot is more intriguing.

Artemis does some more Artemis things. I don't have any memories of this book at all.

Cover of The Stranger Times.

The Stranger Times

by C.K. McDonnell · published 2021 · read 2022-07-20
★★☆☆☆
Urban Fantasy mystery from inside a tiny supernatural-focused newspaper in Manchester. Everybody's a dick, and/or broken, usually both. People die left and right, and we get the inside perspective from Team Antagonist, which doesn't do much
