Woah. Unendlich viel besser als Ready Player One oder Epic. Richtig richtig gute und gruselige Fassung eines KI-gesteuerten RPGs, das Auswirkungen auf die echte Welt hat. Hnnng.

Cover of Joseph Fouché.

Joseph Fouché

by Stefan Zweig · published 1929 · read 2008-07-01
★★★★☆
Stefan Zweig just has a way with words, and his biography of Joseph Fouché taught me more about Napoleon's France (and the France before and afterwards) than my history lessons ever did.

Cover of The World of Yesterday.

The World of Yesterday

by Stefan Zweig · published 1941 · read 2008-12-01
★★★★☆
Autobiographical memories of Zweig's youth in Austrian empire Vienna, as an intellectual jew. Balancing on the line between "elegant" and "overly flowery", late-life Zweig had surprisingly turned into a fan of the monarchy. He's busy romant

Cover of Désirée.

Désirée

by Annemarie Selinko · published 1951 · read 2008-08-01
★★★★☆
Désirée got me started on serious historical fiction – this, or Klaus Kordon, but it's a close race. Désirée is the true tale of Désirée Clary, told in the form of her fictional diary.

Cover of Elanus.

Elanus

by Ursula Poznanski · published 2016 · read 2019-04-04
★★★☆☆
Elanus by Ursula Poznanski is an alright YA thriller/mystery. (Keep in mind that I'm not the intended audience anymore, though). She writes a very good unreliable/unsympathetic protagonist – a way too smart 17-year old boy, who by way of

Fünf

by Ursula Poznanski · published 2012 · read 2016-05-14

Hm, it might just be that I'm not a fan of thrillers, but I don't particularly love this one. There is nothing wrong with it. The characters are very relatable, the story is sound, the details are well-researched, the language and pacing ar

Mandatory reading in many German schools. Not all that exciting a read, unless you are into chess or the art for of the novella tackling the rise of fascism and the cost of obsession.

Cover of Bambi.

Bambi

by Felix Salten · published 1922 · read 2023-03-26

Not tagging plot spoilers for obvious reasons – the movie did not deviate much from the book, all told: Bambi grows up, lears words, plays with other young deer and other animals with quirky personalities, like the owl who is always happy w

Die Habsburger ohne Reich

by Dieter Kindermann · published 2010 · read 2020-07-18
★☆☆☆☆ (did not finish)
This book was honestly, truly, terrible. I picked it up because as a history nerd, "where did this family end up" is always an interesting prompt. I had not thought that a single book could contain this amount of disjointed anecdotes, self-
